Alienware Keyboard Repair — AlienFX RGB & Mechanical
Last Updated:
Alienware keyboards are some of the best laptop keyboards on the market — and some of the most varied: standard AlienFX RGB membrane on most m-series, Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile mechanical on the x15/x17 R1, per-key AlienFX zones on the premium m18 R2 / Aurora variants, and the membrane-but-tactile feel on the x16/x17 R2. Each has its own failure modes. We repair all of them.
Models We Service
Every generation we currently service:
| Model | Year | Common faults | Service status |
|---|---|---|---|
| AlienFX RGB membrane | m15, m16, m17, m18, 16 Aurora, 18 Area-51 | Dead keys, backlight, controller | Yes |
| Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile | x15 R1, x17 R1 (mechanical option) | Individual switch swap | Yes |
| Per-key AlienFX zones | m18 R2, 18 Area-51 top-spec | RGB controller flex | Yes |
| Tactile membrane (refined) | x16 R2, x17 R2, 16 Aurora | Membrane wear | Yes |
Common Issues & How We Fix Them
Dead or intermittent keys
Most-common Alienware keyboard fault. Membrane wear on heavy-use keys (WASD for gamers, E/A/S/T for typists). Membrane-replacement keyboards swap as a complete deck. $300-$480 fitted depending on generation.
AlienFX RGB backlight failure
Two failure modes: (1) software state — Alienware Command Center has lost the connection to the keyboard, fix is reinstall + firmware re-flash (free); (2) hardware — the LED controller flex or LED driver IC has failed, requires keyboard-deck replacement ($300-$480) or controller-board swap ($180-$280).
Per-key zone failures (premium m18/Area-51)
On per-key AlienFX models, individual keys can stop lighting while still typing fine. Sometimes it’s the per-key LED itself; sometimes it’s the controller’s zone mapping. Diagnostic via Command Center; we replace deck if hardware.
Cherry MX switch wear (x15/x17 R1)
Heavy gamers wear out specific Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile switches — WASD goes mushy or doesn’t actuate cleanly. We have a small stock of replacement switches; desolder/resolder per switch, $40-$60 fitted each.
Spill damage to keyboard PCB
Sugary drinks, coffee, water — all kill the membrane PCB. Caught within 24 hours, ultrasonic clean often saves it. After 72 hours, replacement is usually the path. $180-$280 for clean; $300-$480 for replacement.
Keyboard backlight stays on continuously
Usually a Command Center setting (keyboard backlight timeout). Free fix in 5 minutes.
“Keyboard not detected” on boot
Internal flex disconnection — common after a battery replacement done by someone else who didn’t reseat the flex. Free if just reseating; $180 if flex damaged.

Alienware Keyboard Repair — your questions answered
How much does an Alienware keyboard replacement cost in Australia?
Deck replacements for m15 through m18 series range from $300 to $480 fitted, while per-key models on the m18 R2 and Area-51 sit between $420 and $560. Mechanical switch work on x15 and x17 R1 starts from $180.
Can you repair individual keys on my Alienware without replacing the whole keyboard?
Single Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile switches on x15 and x17 R1 models can be desoldered and replaced. Membrane and per-key RGB decks are replaced as complete assemblies because the contact layers and LED arrays are bonded to the deck.
Will my Alienware still have full RGB lighting after a keyboard repair?
Yes, we reinstall the correct OEM-spec deck or controller flex and re-initialise AlienFX through Command Center so every zone returns to full function. Firmware is re-flashed during the same visit.
How long does an Alienware keyboard repair usually take?
Most membrane and flex repairs are completed in one to two business days. Mechanical switch work and per-key deck replacements may take three to five days depending on parts availability.
