Losing irreplaceable photos — from holidays, weddings, newborn shoots or once-in-a-lifetime moments — is one of the most emotionally devastating forms of data loss. The Original PC Doctor specialises in photo and video recovery from every storage device and failure scenario: deleted photos, formatted memory cards, failed hard drives, dead smartphones, scratched optical discs and corrupted camera RAW files. We’ve recovered over a million images for Australian families, photographers and businesses since 2001.

Whether your SD card says “No images” after a camera error, your external hard drive with years of family photos stopped spinning, or you accidentally hit “Delete All” on your DSLR, our engineers can retrieve your memories with a success rate of 90–99% in most logical failure cases.

Every Device We Recover Photos From
Photo Loss Scenarios We Handle Every Day
- “Card Error” or “No Images” on camera after shooting — the photos were written to the card but the file system index was corrupted. Do not shoot any more photos on the card. Your images are almost certainly still there.
- Accidentally deleted photos or “Delete All” on camera — deletion in most cameras only removes the file system entry, not the image data. 90–99% recovery rate if you stop using the card immediately.
- SD card formatted in the wrong camera or accidentally in-computer — a quick format doesn’t erase photos; it only rewrites the file system index. The underlying image data survives until overwritten.
- External hard drive with photo library stopped working — years of Lightroom catalogues, Capture One libraries or raw photo archives on a failed external drive. We recover both the image files and the catalogues.
- Computer died with only copy of photos on internal drive — laptop or desktop failure where the photos were never backed up externally. We recover the drive regardless of whether the computer is repairable.
- Photos missing after iOS or Android update — update failures can corrupt internal storage and hide or delete photo libraries. Recoverable in most cases before the device is factory reset.
- NAS photo library (Plex, Synology Photos, Immich) became inaccessible — RAID or filesystem failure on the NAS device storing your photo library. We recover both the images and the database.
- Water or physically damaged camera, drone or phone — the storage component is often intact even when the device is destroyed. We extract the storage chip or card and recover images directly.
- Corrupted RAW files that won’t open — partial RAW recovery for truncated or header-corrupted CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, DNG and other camera RAW formats.
- Wedding, event or commercial shoot with a corrupted card — we offer emergency same-day turnaround for professional photographers. Call immediately, don’t wait.
Photo & Video File Formats We Recover

We use signature-based file carving to recover images directly from raw disk sectors, independent of the file system. This means we can recover files even when the file system is completely destroyed — as long as the image data itself was written to the storage medium.
What To Do Right Now — Stop the Clock on Data Loss
Do NOT take any more photos on the affected card — every new shot overwrites recovered data. Do NOT use the card or drive as storage for anything else. Do NOT run consumer recovery software on a physically damaged drive or clicking hard drive — this applies even if the software says it found your photos. Do NOT format the card again hoping to “fix” it.
Remove the card or drive and set it aside. Do not power on a physically damaged device. For water-damaged cameras, seal in a plastic bag without drying. Call 1300 723 628 — we’ll tell you exactly what to do based on your specific situation.
Our Photo Recovery Process
- Free phone assessment — describe what happened, what device, and how critical the images are. We’ll advise whether consumer software is appropriate or whether lab recovery is needed, and give you a price range before you commit.
- Forensic imaging — we image your card or drive to a forensic clone before anything else. We never work on originals.
- File system reconstruction + deep file carving — we first attempt to recover the original folder structure and filenames (important for Lightroom/Capture One catalogue integrity). Where file system recovery fails, we run signature-based carving to extract images directly from raw sectors.
- Preview and approval — for photo recoveries we typically provide a thumbnail preview of recovered images before you pay, so you know exactly what you’re getting back.
- Delivery — recovered photos delivered on a new USB drive, via secure cloud download, or by courier. Your original card or device is returned with your recovered files.

FAQs — Photo Recovery
How much does photo recovery cost?
SD card and USB flash drive photo recovery from logical failures (deletion, format, card error) typically starts at $200–$500 AUD. Hard drive photo recovery ranges from $300–$1,500 depending on the failure type. Phone photo recovery starts at $300–$600. We provide a free phone assessment and a fixed quote before any work begins — call 1300 723 628.

Can you recover photos from a formatted SD card?
Yes — in the vast majority of cases. Formatting an SD card (especially a quick format) only erases the file system index, not the underlying image data. As long as you haven’t taken new photos on the card since formatting, recovery success rates are typically 90–99%. We use deep file carving to extract images directly from the raw sectors of the card, recovering images even when the folder structure is gone.
My wedding photos are on a corrupted card — how urgent is this?
Very urgent — call us immediately on 1300 723 628. Do not put the card back in the camera or use any other card in the same camera until we’ve assessed the situation. We offer emergency same-day turnaround for professional and time-critical photo recoveries. The sooner you contact us, the better your chances of a complete recovery.
Can you recover RAW files, not just JPEGs?
Yes. We recover all major camera RAW formats: CR2 and CR3 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), ARW (Sony), RAF (Fujifilm), ORF (Olympus), RW2 (Panasonic), DNG (universal/Leica/Ricoh/DJI), 3FR (Hasselblad) and many more. We also attempt partial recovery of truncated RAW files — where only part of the image data was written before the card was ejected or failed.
Can you recover photos from a broken or water-damaged phone?
Often yes. We assess whether the internal NAND flash storage is intact even if the phone itself is destroyed. For iPhones, we can also attempt recovery via a chip-off extraction of the NAND. For Android phones, we access internal storage directly via engineering recovery modes where possible. Water-damaged phones should be kept powered off and sealed in a plastic bag — do not attempt to charge or power on.
Will my photos be in the original folder structure?
For file system-level recovery (where the file system is intact or repairable) we recover original folder names, file names, and creation dates — preserving Lightroom and Capture One catalogue references. For deep file carving where the file system is destroyed, recovered files are typically named by file type and sector position (e.g. IMAGE_0001.JPG). We always attempt file system recovery first to preserve structure before falling back to carving.
