ThinkPad TrackPoint Repair — Drift, Sticky, Cap Wear
Last Updated:
The TrackPoint is one of the most iconic features in laptop history — the red nubby pointing stick between G, H and B keys on every ThinkPad since 1992. ThinkPad enthusiasts use it religiously for keyboard-without-hands-leaving-home-row navigation. When it drifts, gets sticky, or stops responding, the ThinkPad experience suffers. We repair TrackPoints across every ThinkPad generation.
Common Issues & How We Fix Them
TrackPoint drift
Cursor moves on its own when finger is off the stick. Usually calibration drift — recalibrate via Lenovo Vantage or BIOS. Free remote fix. Hardware fault if recalibration doesn’t hold.
Sticky / no response
Often debris under the cap. Free clean with isopropyl alcohol. Persistent: TrackPoint sensor replacement, $180-$280.
TrackPoint cap wear
The red dome wears down with use. We stock the classic soft-dome, modern low-profile, and the convex/concave variants. $20-$40 inc. fitting.
TrackPoint buttons (above touchpad) not clicking
Three physical buttons above the touchpad — middle is the scroll modifier. Wear: $180-$280 to replace.
TrackPoint in newer Z-series / X1 Nano
Newer chassis have integrated TrackPoint with no physical buttons (use touchpad). Same service workflow.
Vantage / BIOS settings
Sensitivity, scroll behaviour, drag-and-drop all configurable via Lenovo Vantage. Free remote configuration.
