Microsoft Surface Data Recovery — Soldered Storage Specialists
Last Updated:
Microsoft Surface data recovery is a different beast from desktop or even MacBook data recovery. Most Surfaces have a soldered NVMe BGA chip directly on the mainboard — you can’t just pull the drive and read it from another machine. We use chip-off recovery for soldered storage and standard image-and-clone for the few Surfaces with removable M.2.
We’ve been doing data recovery since The Original PC Doctor opened in 2001, including thousands of Microsoft Surface devices. BitLocker-encrypted? We can work with the recovery key. Soldered storage on a dead board? We desolder the BGA chip and read it on a specialist reader. Workshop only — data recovery is precision work.
Models We Service
Every Microsoft Surface generation we currently service for this issue:
| Model | Year | Common faults | Service status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Pro 4-7 | Soldered NVMe BGA | Chip-off recovery if board dead | Workshop only |
| Surface Pro 7+ business | Removable M.2 2230 | Standard image-and-clone | Workshop only |
| Surface Pro 8-11 | Removable M.2 2230 | Standard image-and-clone | Workshop only |
| Surface Laptop 1-2 | Soldered NVMe BGA | Chip-off if board dead | Workshop only |
| Surface Laptop 3-7 | Removable M.2 2230 | Standard image-and-clone | Workshop only |
| Surface Book 1-3 | Removable M.2 2230 (tablet portion) | Standard image-and-clone | Workshop only |
| Surface Go 1-2 | Soldered eMMC | Chip-off for older variants | Workshop only |
| Surface Go 3-4 / Laptop Go | Removable M.2 2230 | Standard image-and-clone | Workshop only |
Common Issues & How We Fix Them
Working device, want a backup
Standard image-and-clone: $180-$280 depending on storage size. We image the full SSD to an external drive, you walk out with a complete bit-for-bit backup.
Dead board, removable SSD
For Surfaces with M.2 2230 NVMe (most modern Surfaces): we remove the SSD, read it on an external adapter, recover all accessible data. $280-$420. Files are encrypted? See BitLocker section below.
Dead board, soldered storage
Chip-off recovery: we desolder the BGA NVMe chip from the mainboard, mount it on a specialist reader, recover the data. Precision work — $850-$1,500 depending on chip and storage size.
BitLocker-encrypted storage
Modern Surfaces are BitLocker-encrypted by default. To recover encrypted data we need either: the BitLocker recovery key (saved to your Microsoft account, look it up at account.microsoft.com), or the original password if it was a non-Microsoft-account device. Without the key, data recovery from the encrypted bytes is not possible.
Water-damaged storage
If a water-damaged Surface won’t power on, the storage chip is usually fine — the damage is to power-management ICs. Chip-off recovery works on all but the most catastrophically damaged boards.
Stuck on Microsoft logo / boot loop
Often the storage is fine and only the OS install is corrupted. Boot from recovery USB, mount the storage, copy your user folder out. $180-$280, no chip-off needed.
Our Repair Process
- Free phone consultation — what’s wrong, what data matters, what’s the Surface model.
- Quote per fault type (image-clone vs M.2-pull vs chip-off).
- Workshop intake.
- Data recovery operation — same-day for image-clone, 1-2 days for M.2-pull, 3-5 days for chip-off.
- Hand-back on external drive of your choice.
- BitLocker requirement — encryption key must be supplied for any encrypted recovery.
