Telstra modem light colours – full guide

The front light on a Telstra Smart Modem tells you how (and whether) you’re connected. The colours are consistent across Gen 2, Gen 3 and the Smart Modem 4:

Front lightWhat it meansWhat to do
Solid greenOnline via fixed NBN/DSL lineAll good – nothing to do
Solid blueOnline via 4G/5G mobile backupFixed line is down – check NBN box / cables
Solid redNo connection at allRestart; if it stays red there’s a line or modem fault
Orange / amberTrying to connect / no sync yetWait a few minutes; check the line if it persists
WhiteBooting upWait for it to finish starting
Flashing blue/greenFirmware updatingLeave it for up to 10 minutes – do not unplug
No light / offNo powerCheck the power switch and wall socket

The back lights (4G/5G signal)

Smart Modems also have signal lights on the back for the mobile backup: green = strong signal, orange = okay, red = weak. These only matter when the modem is using mobile backup (front light blue).

Most common: red light or flashing light with no internet

A solid red front light with no internet almost always means the modem can’t sync the line – try a full restart (power off 30 seconds, back on, wait 10 minutes). A light that keeps flashing and never goes solid green is usually a line/sync or provisioning problem. If a restart doesn’t fix it, we can diagnose whether it’s the NBN line, the modem or the settings and get you back online.

Common Telstra modem problems we fix

  • Solid red light — no connection
  • Stuck on solid blue (running on mobile backup)
  • A light that flashes and never goes solid
  • No lights at all
  • Orange/amber that won’t progress to green
  • Different colours after a storm or area outage

The front light tells you how you’re connected and the back lights show 4G/5G signal strength. A colour that won’t settle to green after a restart usually means a line or sync fault rather than a faulty modem — we can tell the difference quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What does a red light on my Telstra modem mean?

A solid red front light means no connection – the modem can’t sync the fixed line and has no mobile backup. Restart it; if it stays red, there’s a line or modem fault that needs diagnosis.

What does a blue light mean on a Telstra modem?

Solid blue means the modem is online using 4G/5G mobile backup because the fixed NBN/DSL line is down. Once the fixed line is restored it returns to green.

My Telstra modem light keeps flashing – is that bad?

A brief flash during startup or a firmware update (up to 10 minutes) is normal. A light that keeps flashing and never turns solid green usually means a line-sync or provisioning issue.

What colour should my Telstra modem light be?

Solid green – that means you’re online through the fixed NBN/DSL line.
