Got Wi-Fi dead spots and a booster or extender to set up? Done right, an extender fills the gaps; done wrong, it can halve your speed. Here’s how to set one up properly on any brand – and when a mesh system is the better answer. The Original PC Doctor can set up boosters or mesh and tune your whole-home coverage.

Wi-Fi extender setup – step by step
- Place the extender halfway between your router and the dead spot – where it still gets a strong signal from the router (not in the dead spot itself).
- Power it on and use the brand app or its setup page (or press WPS on both the router and extender).
- Connect it to your existing Wi-Fi and let it copy your network.
- Give the extended network a clear name (or use the same name so devices roam).
- Test in the dead spot and nudge the placement until the signal is solid.
Extender vs mesh – which should you use?
A single extender is a cheap fix for one weak room, but it can cut throughput and creates a second network to manage. A mesh system (Deco, Orbi, eero, Nest, ZenWiFi) gives seamless whole-home coverage on one network and is the better choice for larger homes or multiple dead spots. We can advise which fits and set it up.
Common problems we fix
- Extender placed too far away so it just repeats a weak signal
- Speed drops after adding the extender
- Devices cling to the weak network instead of the strong one
- WPS pairing won’t connect
- Two Wi-Fi names causing confusion
- Big home that really needs mesh, not an extender

Frequently asked questions
How do I set up a Wi-Fi extender?
Place it halfway between the router and the dead spot where it still gets a strong signal, power it on, then connect it to your Wi-Fi via the brand app or WPS. Name the network clearly and test in the dead spot.
Where should I put my Wi-Fi extender?
Halfway between the router and the weak area – in a spot that still receives a strong signal from the router. Putting it in the dead spot just rebroadcasts a weak signal.
Why did my internet get slower after adding an extender?
Single-band extenders share airtime with your devices, which can halve throughput, especially if placed too far from the router. Mesh avoids this – we can advise.
Is a mesh system better than an extender?
For larger homes or several dead spots, yes – mesh (Deco, Orbi, eero, Nest, ZenWiFi) gives seamless coverage on one network. An extender is fine for a single weak room.
Will an extender use the same Wi-Fi name?
It can – using the same name lets devices roam automatically; a separate name lets you choose manually. We’ll set whichever works best for you.
Can you set up my Wi-Fi booster or mesh?
Yes – we set up extenders or mesh systems, place them for best coverage, and tune your whole-home Wi-Fi, onsite or remotely.
