What’s different about the Telstra Smart Modem 4
The Smart Modem 4 (Gen 4) is Telstra’s current flagship gateway. It runs Wi-Fi 7, carries 2 GB of RAM (double the Gen 3) for busier households, and includes an automatic 5G/4G mobile backup that keeps you online if the fixed line drops on eligible plans. It works on FTTP, FTTN, FTTC and HFC.
Setting up the Telstra Smart Modem 4 – step by step
- Connect the modem to your NBN connection box (or wall socket for FTTN) using the supplied cable.
- Plug in the power and switch it on – the front light shows white while it boots.
- Wait for the first-time firmware update – this can take up to 10 minutes. Don’t unplug it during this step.
- When the front light turns solid green, you’re online via the fixed network. Solid blue means it’s running on 5G/4G backup.
- Find the Wi-Fi name and password on the sticker on the base of the modem, and connect your devices – or scan the QR code with the My Telstra app.
Smart Modem 4 status lights
| Light | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Solid green | Online via the fixed NBN/DSL line – all good |
| Solid blue | Online via 5G/4G mobile backup (fixed line is down) |
| Solid red | No connection – no line sync and no mobile backup |
| Orange / amber | Trying to connect / negotiating the line |
| White | Booting up |
| Flashing blue/green | Firmware updating – leave it alone for up to 10 min |
Logging in to the Smart Modem 4
Open http://192.168.0.1 (or http://mymodem) in a browser. On the Smart Modem 4 the admin password is the Wi-Fi password printed on the base sticker (not the word “Telstra”). Lost it? Hold the recessed reset button for 10 seconds to factory-reset, then reconfigure.
Common Telstra Smart Modem 4 modem problems we fix
- First-time firmware update stuck on a white light
- Can’t find the Wi-Fi password (it’s on the base sticker)
- 5G/4G backup won’t take over when the fixed line drops
- Slower-than-expected Wi-Fi 7 speeds or dead spots
- Devices won’t connect or keep dropping off
- Modem won’t activate in the My Telstra app
The Smart Modem 4 runs a one-off firmware update on first power-up that can take up to 10 minutes, so most ‘won’t connect’ reports on a brand-new unit are really just that update finishing. If it still isn’t solid green after about 15 minutes, that points to a genuine line or modem fault worth diagnosing.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set up the Telstra Smart Modem 4?
Connect it to your NBN box or wall socket, power it on, let the first firmware update finish (up to 10 minutes), wait for a solid green light, then join Wi-Fi using the name and password on the base sticker or via the My Telstra app.
What does a blue light mean on the Smart Modem 4?
A solid blue front light means the modem is online through 5G/4G mobile backup because the fixed NBN line is down. If it stays blue, the fixed connection needs attention.
What is the login for the Telstra Smart Modem 4?
Browse to 192.168.0.1 or http://mymodem. The admin password is the Wi-Fi password on the sticker on the base of the modem.
Is the Smart Modem 4 better than the Gen 3?
Yes – it adds Wi-Fi 7, double the RAM (2 GB) for more simultaneous devices, and faster, more reliable 5G/4G backup.
