Why XPS batteries swell so reliably
Two compounding factors: (1) Dell’s choice of high-energy-density lithium-polymer cell chemistry that’s optimised for capacity over lifespan, (2) the XPS thin chassis runs the cell at higher ambient temperature than most thicker laptops. Combined, they bring battery end-of-life faster than competing premium brands.
Trackpad lift — the classic warning
The XPS trackpad sits directly above the battery cell. Earliest visible symptom of swell: trackpad doesn’t sit flush with the chassis, clicks feel pre-pressed, you can rock the trackpad with a finger. Bring it in.
Chassis distortion
Late-stage swell: the bottom cover bulges, the laptop rocks on a flat surface, gap appears at the keyboard deck seam. Now you’re risking chassis-cover damage in addition to the battery cost.
Runtime drop without swell
Some XPS cells degrade chemistry-only — capacity halves over 18 months. Worth a battery test even without visible swell symptoms.
Risk of leaving a swollen battery in
Elevated risk of cell venting. Lithium fire risk is low but non-zero. Stop using, don’t keep on charge.
