Why XPS batteries swell so reliably

Trackpad lift — the classic warning
The XPS trackpad sits directly above the battery cell. Earliest visible symptom of swell: trackpad doesn’t sit flush with the chassis, clicks feel pre-pressed, you can rock the trackpad with a finger. Bring it in.
Chassis distortion
Late-stage swell: the bottom cover bulges, the laptop rocks on a flat surface, gap appears at the keyboard deck seam. Now you’re risking chassis-cover damage in addition to the battery cost.
