12 Months Free credit monitoring available for selected Optus customers
Optus will give all current and former customers who were “most affected” by the data breach a free 12-month subscription. This subscription is for a credit monitoring and identity protection service from Equifax Protect.
Optus did not explain what “most affected” means. We can assume that all customers with visible ID documents are part of this group. This includes things like passport numbers and driver’s licenses.
Optus will contact these customers soon. They will provide information on how to start the new Equifax subscription in the coming weeks. The telco advises these communications will not include any hyper-links. If you get email or SMS purporting to be from Optus with a link, do not click – it’s a scam, its better to call them back to make sure its them.
Equifax Credit & Identity Protect costs $14.95 each month. This includes a monthly credit report, alerts for changes, dark-web monitoring, and expiry alerts.
Optus says, officially, it has now contacted all customers with identification documents compromised as part of the breach. It is now reaching out to customers with other details, such as their email addresses, exposed.
