Microsoft Surface Keyboard Repair — Type Cover & Built-In

Last Updated:

Surface keyboards come in three flavours: detachable Type Cover / Signature Keyboard (Pro and Go), and built-in keyboard decks (Laptop, Laptop Studio, Book base, Laptop Go). All wear, all are repairable. The most common faults: dead keys from membrane wear, “keyboard not detected” from pogo-pin contact issues (Pro / Go), and spill damage that’s killed the PCB underneath.

Workshop turnaround typically 90 minutes to 3 hours for built-in keyboards (the deck has to come out of the chassis); same-day on detachable covers.

Common Issues & How We Fix Them

“Keyboard not detected” on Pro / Go Type Cover

Usually pogo-pin contact issue — lint contamination, bent pin, oxidised contact. Free clean and test as part of any diagnostic visit. Replacement Type Cover if the cover itself is faulty.

Dead or intermittent keys (built-in keyboards)

Membrane wear. Individual keys cannot be replaced — the keyboard deck swaps as a complete unit. $280-$420 fitted depending on model.

Spill on built-in keyboard

Sticky residue from sugary drinks, or shorted PCB from any liquid. Disassembly, clean, assess PCB. Often $180-$280 for clean-only; replacement deck if PCB is dead ($380-$520).

Backlight not working

Built-in keyboards have an LED backlight strip — when it dies it’s usually a connector issue. $180 to inspect and re-seat, replace strip if needed.

Touchpad clicking strangely (Laptop / Studio)

On the Laptop line, almost always battery swell underneath the trackpad (see battery replacement). On the Studio with haptic touchpad, usually a driver/firmware state we can recover from.

Type Cover hinge worn

The Cover’s magnetic hinge to the Surface can lose magnetic grip with age. Replacement Cover usually the right call — cleaning rarely restores enough grip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can individual keys be replaced on a Surface keyboard?

No — the keyboard is a sealed membrane assembly. The whole deck (built-in) or whole Cover (detachable) replaces as a unit.

My Surface Pro doesn't detect my Type Cover — what's wrong?

Usually lint in the pogo-pin connector. Free clean-and-retest. If still not detected, it’s either the cover (bring it for swap-test) or the connector ribbon inside the chassis.

How much does a Surface Laptop keyboard deck replacement cost?

$280-$450 fitted depending on generation. Includes membrane, backlight, frame and trackpad.

I spilled coffee on my Surface keyboard — is it fixable?

Yes — bring it in within 24 hours. Same protocol as water damage: power off, don’t try to dry yourself, bring in for ultrasonic clean.

Will replacing the keyboard reset Windows or my data?

No — keyboard replacement is purely physical, doesn’t touch storage or firmware.

Microsoft Surface Keyboard Repair — your questions answered

How much does it cost to replace a Surface Laptop keyboard?

Surface Laptop keyboard deck replacement ranges from $280 to $420 fitted depending on the generation. The entire deck must be swapped because individual keys cannot be repaired. We remove the bottom case, disconnect the battery, and fit a new membrane assembly with a 90-day warranty.

Can you fix a Surface Pro keyboard that is not detected?

Most detection issues on Surface Pro Type Covers are caused by dirty or bent pogo pins. We clean the contacts during the diagnostic at no extra charge. If the keyboard itself is faulty we supply a replacement Signature Keyboard the same day.

Is it worth repairing a spilled Surface Laptop keyboard?

We disassemble the unit, clean the PCB, and test for corrosion. If the board is intact the job is usually $180-$280. If traces are damaged we quote a full deck replacement from $280. You only pay if the repair succeeds.

How long does a Surface keyboard repair take?

Detachable Type Covers are normally completed the same day. Built-in decks on Surface Laptop or Book models require 2 to 3 hours workshop time because the chassis must be opened and the battery disconnected before the deck can be swapped.

Do you use genuine Microsoft parts for Surface keyboard repairs?

We source Microsoft-grade replacement decks and Signature Keyboards that match the original connector layout and membrane thickness. All parts carry our 90-day warranty on both labour and components.
