Razer Blade Thermal Repaste — Liquid Metal + PTM7950 Service

Last Updated:

Razer Blade uses three different thermal compounds depending on SKU year and tier: (1) standard PTM7950 phase-change pads on Base models and Razer Book, (2) Conductonaut liquid metal on Advanced + top-spec Blades 2020-2023, (3) Conductonaut Extreme (newer formulation, less pump-out) on Blade 16/18 from 2024.

Pump-out is the dominant failure mode for liquid metal — the metal migrates out from under the IHS over 18-36 months, leaving an air gap. Symptoms: CPU temps spike to 95-100°C under any load, GPU temps generally still OK. Fix is a full pump-out clean (carefully remove migrated metal from surrounding SMD components) + re-application with proper nickel-foil dam to stop it migrating again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard repaste cost?

$320 for PTM7950 phase-change paste. $420 for Conductonaut / Conductonaut Extreme liquid-metal re-application (the higher cost reflects the additional clean-down + foil-dam work).

How often should I repaste?

PTM7950: 36-48 months. Conductonaut (older formulation): 24-36 months. Conductonaut Extreme: 36-48 months. We recommend a preventive check at 24 months regardless.

Can I downgrade from liquid metal to regular paste?

Yes, but you lose 5-10°C of headroom under sustained load. Some users prefer the simpler maintenance and slightly higher peaks. We can do PTM7950 in place of Conductonaut at the customer’s request.

What's the difference between Conductonaut and Conductonaut Extreme?

Extreme is a Thermal Grizzly newer formulation with significantly better pump-out resistance. Razer adopted Extreme on 2024+ Blades. We use Extreme on all liquid-metal re-applications going forward.

Will the warranty void if I get liquid-metal service from you?

If you’re inside Razer warranty, opening the chassis voids it. Out of warranty, no risk. We document everything for resale provenance.

Razer Blade Thermal Repaste faults we repair every week

Conductonaut pump-out

Symptom: CPU reaches 95-100°C under load while GPU stays cooler

How we fix it: Remove migrated liquid metal from SMDs with IPA and lint-free swabs, fit nickel-foil dam around die, re-apply fresh Conductonaut or Conductonaut Extreme.

Repair or replace? repair

PTM7950 pad degradation

Symptom: Gradual 8-12°C rise in CPU/GPU temps after 36+ months

How we fix it: Clean old phase-change material, replace with new 0.25 mm PTM7950 pad cut to exact die size and pressure-mounted.

Repair or replace? repair

Dried thermal paste on 2020-2022 Advanced models

Symptom: Thermal throttling at 80-85 W sustained loads

How we fix it: Full strip-down, remove old paste with TIM remover, re-apply high-performance paste or liquid metal with proper IHS contact.

Repair or replace? repair

Vapor-chamber delamination

Symptom: Hot spots above 100°C in one CPU core cluster despite repaste

How we fix it: Inspect vapor chamber under microscope; if delaminated, replace entire heatsink assembly before re-pasting.

Repair or replace? Depends

Pump-out around GPU die on 2023 Blade 16

Symptom: GPU hits 87°C and fans ramp to 100 % under gaming

How we fix it: Clean migrated metal, fit foil dam on both CPU and GPU, re-apply Conductonaut Extreme and torque heatsink to spec.

Razer Blade Thermal Repaste — your questions answered

How much does a Razer Blade thermal repaste cost in Australia?

PTM7950 service is $320. Conductonaut or Conductonaut Extreme liquid-metal work is $420 and includes full clean-down plus nickel-foil dam installation to limit future migration.

How often should I repaste my Razer Blade?

PTM7950 lasts 36-48 months, older Conductonaut 24-36 months, and Conductonaut Extreme 36-48 months. We recommend a thermal check at 24 months regardless of compound.

Can I change from liquid metal to normal paste on my Razer Blade?

Yes. We can fit a PTM7950 pad instead, but expect 5-10°C higher sustained temperatures under load. Many owners accept the trade-off for simpler future maintenance.

Is liquid metal safe inside a Razer Blade chassis?

When contained by a nickel-foil dam and applied by technicians experienced with Razer boards it stays in place. Without the dam, pump-out can reach nearby SMD components and cause shorts.

Will repasting void my Razer warranty?

Any internal work can affect warranty status. We document all steps and use OEM-spec materials so you can decide whether to proceed based on your remaining coverage.

Do you offer onsite service for Razer Blade repaste in Australian capital cities?

Yes. Our technicians travel to homes and offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide for same-day diagnostics and 1-3 day turnaround on confirmed repaste jobs.
