💡 Did You Know? — Windows 8 & 8.1
- Windows 8 removed the Start button entirely — the backlash was so strong that Microsoft brought it back in Windows 8.1.
- It was designed “touch-first” for tablets, which caught a lot of mouse-and-keyboard users off guard.
- Windows 8.1 reached end of support on 10 January 2023 — so it now runs without security updates.
Windows 8 & 8.1 Are End of Life — What That Means
Windows 8 had to be updated to 8.1 to stay supported, and Windows 8.1 reached end of support on 10 January 2023. Neither now receives security updates. Your PC keeps working, but the risk grows the longer it stays online. The good news: Windows 8.1 machines are usually newer than Windows 7 ones, so more of them can be upgraded — we’ll check yours.
Keeping a Windows 8 & 8.1 PC Safely — Offline Use & Legacy Software
You don’t always have to upgrade. A lot of older computers are used offline — and a machine that isn’t connected to the internet simply can’t be attacked over the network. If your Windows 8 & 8.1 PC does one job (a photo or music library, a scanner or camera, a piece of equipment, the family games) and rarely or never goes online, it can keep doing that safely for years. Where it does connect, the key is keeping your antivirus and security software up to date and being sensible with USB sticks and downloads. We’ll set it up so your old machine stays useful and protected.
Running legacy business software? Plenty of businesses need to keep a specific Windows version because a critical program — accounting, point-of-sale, design, medical, industrial or machine-control software — only runs on it. We assist with exactly these machines: we keep them stable, lock them down, isolate them from the rest of your network where needed, and can even run the legacy software in a virtual machine on a modern, secure PC so you get the best of both worlds. If a legacy system is the backbone of your business, we’ll help you keep it running without leaving you exposed.

Frequently Asked Questions — Windows 8 & 8.1
Can you still fix a Windows 8 or 8.1 computer?
Yes — we repair and troubleshoot Windows 8 and 8.1 machines regularly: boot problems, slow performance, stuck updates, touchscreen and driver faults, and software issues. We’ll fix it, make it safer, or upgrade it — your call.
Is Windows 8.1 still supported?
No. Windows 8.1 reached end of support on 10 January 2023, so it no longer receives security updates. It still runs, but it’s increasingly risky online. We’ll help you secure it or move to a supported version.
Should I upgrade from Windows 8 — and to what?
Most Windows 8.1 PCs are new enough to move to Windows 10 or, if they meet the requirements (TPM 2.0, recent CPU), straight to Windows 11. We check your exact machine and recommend the best path — upgrade or replace — with no pressure.
My Windows 8 PC is slow or won’t update — can you help?
Absolutely. Slow Windows 8 PCs usually come right back to life with an SSD, a RAM boost and a clean-up; update faults we fix by repairing the update components or doing a clean reinstall. We’ll diagnose it and quote up front.
Will I lose my files if I upgrade from Windows 8?
No. We back everything up first, then migrate your documents, photos, email and settings and reinstall your programs. Nothing is touched until your data is safely copied — all covered by our No Fix, No Fee Guarantee.
Is Windows 8.1 safe to use in 2025 or 2026?
Offline, yes — a machine that isn’t connected can’t be attacked over the network. Online it’s riskier, since Windows 8.1 stopped getting security updates on 10 January 2023, so keep your antivirus up to date and be careful online, or let us upgrade it. Most Windows 8.1 PCs are new enough to move to Windows 10 or 11.
Is Windows 8.1 still supported?
No — Microsoft ended support for Windows 8.1 on 10 January 2023, so there are no more security updates. It still runs, and it’s fine offline, but for online use we’d recommend hardening it or upgrading. We’ll check your PC and recommend the best path.
Can you keep a Windows 8 business PC running for legacy software?
Yes. If your business relies on software that only runs on Windows 8 or 8.1, we keep that machine stable and secure, isolate it on your network where needed, or run the legacy software in a virtual machine on a modern PC so you keep the program and stay protected.
