Last Updated:
The ROG Ally (2023) and Ally X (2024) are ASUS’s handheld gaming PCs — competing with Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go. AMD Ryzen Z1 / Z1 Extreme APU, 7″ 120Hz LCD, full Windows 11. Different repair domain to a regular laptop — joystick drift, trigger boards, SD card slot, ergonomics-related wear. We service both Ally generations.
Models We Service
Every generation we currently service:
| Model | Year | Common faults | Service status |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally (2023) | First-gen Z1 Extreme | SD card slot famous fault, drift | Yes |
| ROG Ally X (2024) | Refined — bigger battery | Better SD slot, drift less common | Yes |
Common Issues & How We Fix Them
Joystick drift (Hall-effect upgrade)
Standard Ally / Ally X joysticks are potentiometer-based — drift develops over months. Hall-effect joystick upgrade kits available; we install. $180-$280 per joystick.
SD card slot failure (Ally first-gen — famous)
The original Ally had a thermal-vent-too-close-to-SD-slot issue that destroyed cards (and the slot). Slot replacement: $180-$280 fitted. Recommend external NVMe via USB-C as alternative.
Trigger micro-switch wear
L1/L2/R1/R2 micro-switches wear with use. Replacement: $80-$140 per switch + labour.
D-pad mushy or unresponsive
Membrane replacement: $120-$220.
Thermal throttling under sustained gaming
Handheld chassis tight thermals. Re-paste with PTM7950: $220-$280.
Battery degradation
Ally first-gen had smaller 40Wh battery; Ally X bumped to 80Wh. Battery replacement: $280-$420.
Screen cracks
7″ 120Hz panel. Replacement: $380-$580 fitted.
XG Mobile port (Ally X removed it)
Original Ally has XG Mobile eGPU port. Ally X dropped it for an extra USB-C. Port repair available.

ASUS ROG Ally Repair — your questions answered
How much does it cost to fix SD card slot failure on an ASUS ROG Ally?
Slot replacement on the 2023 model ranges from $180 to $280 including parts and labour. We image your storage first and advise external NVMe via USB-C as a longer-term workaround.
Can you upgrade my ROG Ally joysticks to stop drift?
We replace the factory potentiometer sticks with Hall-effect modules for $180-$280 per joystick. The upgrade removes the wear-prone wiper mechanism and restores precise input.
Is battery replacement available for the original 40 Wh ROG Ally?
Yes. A genuine 40 Wh pack fitted with BMS recalibration costs $280-$420. Turnaround is usually one to two days and includes a 90-day warranty on the new battery.
Do you repair the XG Mobile port on the 2023 Ally?
We can reflow or replace the 80-pin connector on the daughterboard for $220-$380. The Ally X removed this port, so this service applies only to the first-generation model.
How long does a typical ROG Ally repair take?
Most common jobs such as joystick upgrades, trigger switches and battery swaps are completed in one to two days. More involved board-level work may take up to three days.
