MacBook Butterfly Keyboard Repair (2016-2019)
Last Updated:
The MacBook butterfly keyboard (2016-2019 13″/15″ MacBook Pro + 2018-2019 MacBook Air) is one of Apple’s most-documented manufacturing failures. The shallow butterfly switch mechanism failed reliably under dust contamination — keys stuck, double-pressed, or stopped working. Apple ran a Keyboard Service Program covering qualifying units for free repair (ended for most models by 2024). Out of warranty, we replace the top case (keyboard + battery + trackpad as one bonded unit). $580-$880 fitted.
Common Issues & How We Fix Them
Stuck or repeating keys
Classic butterfly fault. Dust under the switch mechanism. Apple’s eventual fix was a silicone membrane in 2018+ — partial improvement. Full repair is top-case replacement.
Keys that don’t respond at all
Same fault, more progressed. Replace top case.
Affected models
MacBook Pro 13″/15″ 2016 (gen 1 butterfly), 2017 (gen 2), 2018-2019 (gen 3 with membrane). MacBook Air 2018-2019. All affected to varying degrees; 2016-2017 worst, 2018+ better but still failure-prone.
Apple Keyboard Service Program
Apple’s program covered qualifying units for 4 years from purchase. Most have aged out by 2024-2025. Some still qualify; we check before quoting.
Why top-case-as-one-unit?
Apple bonded keyboard, battery and trackpad into a single assembly. Replacing any one means replacing all three. We do this professionally.
Cost vs Apple
Apple out-of-warranty: $750-$1,200+ depending on model. Us: $580-$880. Same physical part.
Magic Keyboard era (2019+)
Apple returned to scissor-switch (Magic Keyboard) on 16″ Pro 2019 and all later models. Far more reliable. Doesn’t apply to this page — see general MacBook Pro repair.
