MacBook Thermal Repaste — PTM7950 for M3 Max / Intel

Last Updated:

Most M-series MacBooks have excellent thermals out of the box and don’t need preventive thermal service. Exceptions: M3 Max in 14″/16″ Pro (runs warmer than M1/M2 Max under sustained load), and all Intel MacBook Pros 2016-2020 (Intel + factory paste degraded over years). PTM7950 phase-change pad re-paste: $280 flat. Typical 10-25°C improvement.

Common Issues & How We Fix Them

When MacBooks actually need thermal service

Three scenarios: (1) Intel MacBook Pro 4+ years old with throttling complaints, (2) M3 Max 14″/16″ under sustained heavy load running hot, (3) any MacBook that’s had compromised cooling (dust, prior service).

Intel MacBook Pro thermal recovery

Factory paste dried out at 18-24 months. PTM7950 re-paste + heat-exchanger clean. Significant temperature improvement on 2016-2020 Intel Pros.

M3 Max thermal headroom

Recovery is more modest because M-series is already efficient — but persistent throttling on M3 Max Pro benefits from re-paste.

M1, M2, M2 Pro/Max — usually unnecessary

These chassis have plenty of thermal headroom out of factory. Re-paste rarely needed unless cooling has been compromised.

MacBook Air — fanless, can’t repaste

Air’s passive cooling depends on the chassis itself as a heatsink. No paste service applicable.

Process

Disassembly, clean old paste, PTM7950 on CPU/GPU dies, heat-exchanger fin clean, reassemble, 30-min stress test, before/after report. Half-day workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my MacBook need thermal service?

Only if (1) it’s an Intel Pro 4+ years old, (2) it’s an M3 Max running hot under load, or (3) cooling has been previously compromised. Most M-series Macs don’t need this.

Is PTM7950 safe on MacBook?

Yes — it’s a non-conductive phase-change thermal pad designed for laptops. We use it on hundreds of repairs.

How much improvement should I expect?

Intel Pro: 15-25°C drop. M3 Max: 10-15°C drop. M1/M2 Pro/Max: marginal (already optimal).

MacBook Thermal Repaste faults we repair every week

Dried factory thermal paste

Symptom: Throttling and fan spin-up after 18-24 months on 2016-2020 Intel MacBook Pros

How we fix it: Remove heatsink, clean old paste, apply PTM7950 phase-change pad to CPU/GPU dies, clean heat-exchanger fins and reassemble.

Repair or replace? repair

M3 Max sustained-load heat saturation

Symptom: Persistent thermal throttling in 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max models during long renders or compiles

How we fix it: Disassemble, replace factory paste with PTM7950 pad on M3 Max die, clean vapour-chamber fins and verify fan operation.

Repair or replace? repair

Dust-clogged heat exchanger

Symptom: Elevated idle and load temperatures after 3+ years of use on any MacBook Pro

How we fix it: Remove logic board, blow out compacted dust from fins with compressed air and soft brush, then apply fresh PTM7950 pad.

Repair or replace? repair

Compromised prior service cooling

Symptom: Higher than expected temperatures after third-party screen or battery work on 2016-2020 Intel models

How we fix it: Inspect and reseat heatsink, replace any crushed or missing thermal pads, apply PTM7950 to dies and clean fins.

Repair or replace? repair

M-series passive cooling limitation

Symptom: M1/M2 MacBook Pro or Air reaching chassis skin temperatures above 45 °C under load

How we fix it: PTM7950 repaste rarely improves these models; advise against unless dust or prior service has clearly blocked airflow.

MacBook Thermal Repaste — your questions answered

How much temperature drop can I expect from a PTM7950 repaste on my M3 Max MacBook Pro?

Most M3 Max 14-inch and 16-inch units see 10-18 °C lower sustained die temperatures under load after PTM7950 replacement. Gains are smaller than Intel models because Apple’s vapour chamber is already efficient, yet throttling during long renders or compiles is often eliminated.

Is a thermal repaste worth doing on an M1 or M2 MacBook Pro?

M1 and M2 models run cool from the factory and rarely benefit from repasting unless dust has blocked the heat exchanger or a previous repair damaged the original paste. We recommend a diagnostic first before booking the $280 service.

Can you do the thermal repaste at my home or office in Sydney?

Yes, our technicians carry the full PTM7950 kit and can complete the job onsite in most Sydney metro postcodes. Allow 3-4 hours door-to-door; the same 90-day warranty applies as workshop repairs.

Will repasting void my AppleCare or remaining warranty?

Apple treats any internal work as user modification, so remaining AppleCare is voided. Our own 90-day parts-and-labour warranty still covers the PTM7950 pad and reassembly quality.

How long does the MacBook stay in the workshop for a thermal repaste?

Most Intel and M3 Max repastes are finished within half a day. We run a 30-minute stress test, log before-and-after temperatures, and return the machine the same afternoon when booked before 10 am.
