Microsoft Surface Tablet Repairs — RT, Surface 2, Surface 3 & Tablet-Class Models
Last Updated:
Before Microsoft consolidated the line under “Surface Pro”, the original Surface line — Surface RT (2012), Surface 2 (2013) and Surface 3 (2015) — sat below the Pro as a more affordable, ARM- or Atom-based tablet PC. Those devices are now 10+ years old but a surprising number are still in service for vertical applications: point-of-sale, kiosk, signage and education fleets. We repair them.
We also use this page as the landing spot for the generic “surface tablet” search — if you have a tablet-shaped Surface (Pro 4 onwards is technically a tablet too) and you’re not sure which line yours is, start here and we’ll triangulate from a photo or the serial number.

Common Issues & How We Fix Them
Will my old Surface still run modern software?
Surface RT and Surface 2 ran Windows RT — a stripped-down ARM Windows that Microsoft killed in 2015. They cannot run modern desktop Windows. They can still serve as media tablets or kiosk devices if Edge browser support is enough. Surface 3 runs full Windows 10 (and stretches to Windows 11 with a registry workaround) and is fully supportable.
Cracked screen on old Surface tablets
RT, Surface 2 and Surface 3 screen-and-glass assemblies are increasingly hard to source — we keep a small workshop stock for fleet customers. Lead time can be 2-4 weeks if we have to special-order. We’ll be honest about whether replacement is the right call vs retirement.
Battery swell & replacement
RT and Surface 2 batteries are well past their service life — if yours is bulging, retire the device or have us recycle it through secure data erasure. Surface 3 batteries can still be replaced — same process as Pro 3, plus we image the soldered storage as a safety net.
Charger port (Surface 3 — micro USB)
Surface 3 was the only Surface to use micro-USB for charging, not the Surface Connect port. The micro-USB jack wears out faster than the proprietary connectors. Replacement is straightforward — about 90 minutes in workshop.
Software-only recovery
Many “broken tablet” calls turn out to be software — a botched Windows update, a corrupt firmware, a forgotten BitLocker key. We have the Microsoft recovery tools and the chops to fix all of those without opening the chassis.
Our Repair Process
- Free quote — for older Surfaces, our first job is to tell you honestly whether repair makes financial sense.
- Diagnostic — no-fix-no-fee. Software-only diagnosis is often free of charge.
- Data preservation — we image storage before any board-level work.
- Repair or retire — if the unit is at the end of its useful life, we offer secure data erasure and component recycling.
