Microsoft Surface Pro Screen Repair — Pro 4 through Pro 11

Last Updated:

Surface Pro screens are bonded glass-on-LCD assemblies (Pro 8 onwards adds high-refresh-rate options). Drop damage almost always destroys both layers; the assembly is the replaceable unit. We stock Pro 4 through Pro 9 in workshop; Pro 10 and Pro 11 are 3-5 business day order.

Same- or next-day in metro for stocked generations. Genuine Microsoft assemblies, 90-day warranty on parts and labour.

Common Issues & How We Fix Them

Cracked glass, display still works

Even when the LCD underneath looks fine, the cracked glass usually has hairline damage extending into the digitiser — touch will degrade over time. We recommend full assembly replacement.

Black screen after drop

Drop damaged the LCD or the display ribbon. Sometimes the screen replacement alone fixes it; sometimes there’s a board-side ribbon connector that needs re-seating too. Diagnostic confirms.

Touch dead in part of the screen

Digitiser layer damage. The whole assembly is the part; partial-area replacement isn’t a thing on bonded assemblies.

Screen lifting at bezel (no impact)

Battery swell underneath has pushed the assembly off the chassis. You need a battery replacement first; the screen may be recoverable if the swell is caught early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which Surface Pro generation I have?

Settings → System → About → Device specifications. The model number maps to a generation. Or send us a photo of the back-cover label and we’ll identify.

Can the digitiser be replaced separately from the LCD?

No — they’re bonded into a single assembly. The assembly is the smallest replaceable unit.

Is genuine Microsoft glass important?

Yes — aftermarket assemblies often have slightly off colour calibration, dimmer backlight, and softer touch response. We use genuine Microsoft where available.

Will the new screen work as well as the original?

Yes — we colour-calibrate and run a 200-point touch test before returning the device.

Same-day repair — really?

For Pro 4 through Pro 9 in metro postcodes, if the device arrives by 11 AM, yes — collect by 5 PM same day. We hold workshop slots for screen jobs.

Microsoft Surface Pro Screen Repair faults we repair every week

Bonded glass-on-LCD delamination

Symptom: Visible cracks through the cover glass with touch still registering in places but colours washed out or lines appearing

How we fix it: Complete bonded assembly is removed after heating the perimeter adhesive; new genuine Microsoft assembly is aligned and bonded under pressure.

Repair or replace? replace — the bonded construction means glass and LCD must be replaced together.

Display ribbon cable tear

Symptom: Black screen or flickering vertical lines after a drop, even when external display works

How we fix it: Screen assembly is replaced and the new ribbon is seated into the motherboard connector; connector is inspected for bent pins.

Repair or replace? replace — ribbon damage is internal to the assembly on these models.

Digitiser layer fracture

Symptom: Portion of the screen registers no touch or ghost touches after impact

How we fix it: Technician replaces the entire bonded panel; partial digitiser repair is not possible on Surface Pro units.

Repair or replace? replace — digitiser is laminated to the LCD and cannot be serviced separately.

Battery swell pushing screen

Symptom: Screen lifts at the bezel with no drop history; touch may still work initially

How we fix it: Battery is replaced first; screen is re-seated if adhesive has not torn and the panel shows no damage.

Repair or replace? depends — screen may be recoverable once battery pressure is removed.

High-refresh panel failure (Pro 8+)

Symptom: Screen works at 60 Hz but flickers or blanks at 120 Hz after liquid or impact damage

How we fix it: Technician fits the matching high-refresh genuine assembly and confirms firmware recognises the new panel.

Repair or replace? replace — 120 Hz panels require the correct part number for full functionality.

Microsoft Surface Pro Screen Repair — your questions answered

How much does a Microsoft Surface Pro screen replacement cost in Australia?

Genuine Microsoft assemblies for the Surface Pro 4 through Pro 9 range from $450 to $950 depending on generation, with Pro 10 and Pro 11 models from $950 to $1,150. All prices include 90-day warranty on parts and labour.

Can I just replace the glass on my Surface Pro or do I need the whole screen?

Surface Pro models from the Pro 4 onward use a bonded glass-on-LCD construction. The digitiser layer is laminated to the panel, so partial glass replacement is not possible and the complete assembly must be fitted.

How long will my Surface Pro be in for screen repair?

Units we hold in stock (Pro 4 to Pro 9) are usually completed same-day or next-day in metro areas. Pro 10 and Pro 11 assemblies are special order and take three to five business days once the part arrives.

Will a new Surface Pro screen fix touch problems after a drop?

If the digitiser layer has been damaged, touch issues will persist until the entire bonded assembly is replaced. A diagnostic confirms whether the fault is isolated to the screen or involves the motherboard connector.

Do you use genuine Microsoft parts for Surface Pro repairs?

Yes, we fit genuine Microsoft screen assemblies for every generation we service. This ensures correct colour calibration, 120 Hz support on newer models, and full compatibility with Windows firmware.
