On NBN FTTC (Fibre to the Curb) the fibre reaches a small unit in the street pit and the last short run uses the copper line into a powered NBN Connection Device (NCD) inside your home. Your modem connects to the NCD. Here’s how to set it up. The Original PC Doctor sets up NBN connections Australia-wide, no fix no fee.

How to set up NBN FTTC – step by step
- Plug the NBN Connection Device (small white box) into power and into the phone wall socket – it must stay powered on.
- Connect your modem/router from its WAN/Internet (or DSL, depending on model) port to the UNI-D / Gateway port on the NCD.
- Power on the modem and enter your ISP details if prompted.
- Wait for the lights on the NCD and the modem to go solid – you’re online.
- Join Wi-Fi using the details on the modem’s label.
How to tell you have FTTC
You have a small NBN Connection Device that needs power and plugs into the phone socket, with your modem connected to it. If the NCD loses power, the connection drops.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set up NBN FTTC?
Power the NBN Connection Device and plug it into the phone socket, connect your modem to the NCD’s UNI-D/gateway port, power on the modem, enter ISP details if prompted, and wait for the lights to go solid.
Does the FTTC NBN box need power?
Yes – the NBN Connection Device must stay powered. If it loses power the internet drops, which catches people out after outages.
Which port do I connect my modem to on FTTC?
From your modem’s WAN/Internet port to the UNI-D/gateway port on the NBN Connection Device. Some setups use the modem’s DSL port – check your ISP guide.
Do I need a modem for FTTC?
You need a modem/router compatible with FTTC (most ISP-supplied units are). It connects to the powered NBN Connection Device.
My FTTC has no internet – how do I fix it?
Check the NCD is powered and your modem is on the right port with the correct ISP details. We can diagnose the NCD, line or settings and get you online.
Can you set up my FTTC connection?
Yes – we set up the NCD and modem, enter ISP details, confirm the connection and set up Wi-Fi, onsite or remotely.
